July 27, 2010 "The Jews Conspired to Kill Him"

Scripture: Acts 9:23-25
23After many days had gone by, the Jews conspired to kill him, 24but Saul learned of their plan. Day and night they kept close watch on the city gates in order to kill him. 25But his followers took him by night and lowered him in a basket through an opening in the wall.

Meditation:
Paul's old Jewish buddies who used to admire him, now turned on him and wanted to kill him.  When we become Christians, we can look like traitors to our old buddies.  Our values, our preference, our tastes change so we don't do the things we used to do.  The 'world' may resent us for this and hate us for it (even want to 'kill' us for it).  Many times we hear of Christians who change their 'circle of friends' to have new friends (brothers and sisters in the Lord).  This is not being at traitor it is being the new person that we have become and living consistent with our new values and priorities.  It is similar to men who get married and assume they can still have all their old drinking buddies to hang out with.  When we are married our first priority and love (after God) is our wife.  We can't assume we will do all the same things.  We hear, "But I don't want to diss my friends".  Friends are friends and good friends will understand and respect new priorities of the married man and still be a supportive friend to spend meaningful time together.  When we live the kingdom life we will draw others to the new life instead of us having to live in 'both'.  We cannot serve the world and serve God at the same time.  We have to make 'hard' choices for the good.  Saul found some new Christian friends who were there to help him through.  Has your circle of friends changed since you have become a Christian, or are you afraid you will forsake your old 'friends'?

"Lord Jesus help me to love everyone but also to be wise in selecting those who I spend time with for they will influence me in ways I may not be aware.  Help me to surround my self with those in the light for what fellowship does light have with darkness"
